The basic technique of modeling "Mokume Gane". Tutorial

 

Mokume Gane is a Japanese metalworking technique that appeared at the end of the 17th century. In the work on the product, dissimilar metals are interconnected, which as a result forms a decorative pattern resembling wood in texture.

Polymer clay is an amazing material from which you can create a variety of patterns and textures. Including, you can make products that are very similar to the metal patterns of the original Mokume Gane.

This technique is so fond of many masters working with polymer clay, which has become one of the base.

In this master class, I want to show you the easiest version of Mokume Gane, which can be tried by those who recently discovered the modeling of polymer clay.

Materials and tools:

* polymer clay (3-5 colors)
* pasta machine or rolling pin for rolling
* office knife or blade
* toothpicks
* manicure dots
* mold cutters
* work surface (sheet of paper or tile)

I used such polymer clay colors in my work:

 

Please note that I took almost half less dark blue than the rest. When you sculpt, you need to consider that when mixing or forming a pattern, the dark colors of polymer clay tend to "eat" lighter. Therefore, it is better to take a dark color less by a third or even half than a light one.

Each color plastic knead. I roll out the layers on the largest thickness of the pasta machine.

The seams are cut in the shape of a rectangle and stacked one on top of another

 

Then roll out a little rectangle in length. I made this manicure dots

I cut into three parts

Again I put in a pile

And now the fun begins!
The resulting striped cube must be pushed from top to bottom (to the working surface), pierced with different objects. You can use a blade, cutter, toothpick to make a pattern, the opposite end of the brush.

As shown in the photo:

Due to this pushing, layers of different colors are mixed with each other and a beautiful pattern is formed inside.
To see it, take the blade and begin to slowly and carefully cut off layer by layer.

But, in order to be able to make some kind of decoration, it is necessary to roll out such cuts into a layer of equal thickness.

 

And cut out the shape of the vending with a beautiful pattern

I decided to make a pair of earrings, ring and pendant.
For the substrate used a dark blue color of polymer clay

In the pendant decided to make a "crack". On a dark blue base, I sealed a tight rope and toned this place with silver eyeshadow.

Round shape cut out a piece of Mokume Gane reservoir.

And cut it with a blade, drawing an arbitrary line

Transferred to a dark blue base

Also made a frame and toned it with shadows.

Of the remaining sections made the second layer

She also made a simple bracelet in a set for a pendant, earrings and a ring. Here's what I got:

Variants of using the Mokume Gane technique are huge!
You can try different color combinations, patterns, add glitters or mica to polymer clay.
