Introduction
Good day everyone. In my country Nigeria, with its diverse climate, we experience two primary seasons – the dry season(summer) and the rainy season(winter). We Nigerians do not experience distinct summer and winter seasons in the way that regions in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, like Europe or North America, do. The country's climate is caused by its location near the equator, causing an almost relatively consistent temperatures throughout the year.
These opposite periods greatly influences and shape the country's topography, lifestyle, and economical activities. Each season boast of its unique merits and demerits, but in all there create a harmonious rhythm that defines Nigeria's climate.
Summer Season vs Winter Season, which one is your favorite season & why?
I prefer the summer (dry season) to the other, this is so because I do not like rain and cold. I like the sun and I love to go to anywhere I want without having to think about rain falling and spoiling my plans. With the dry season I can dress freely not worrying about cardigan or sweaters. I like to wear light materials and this is very comfortable during the summer season.
Dry Season(Summer):
The dry season in my country(Nigeria) typically stretches from the month of November to March. It is always characterized by high temperatures and sunshine, and low rainfall, this period has both advantages and disadvantages.
Advantages of the Dry Season:
1. Agricultural:
The dry season is the best for agriculture in Nigeria, we call it the harvesting season over here. The farmers go out to harvest their crops and prepare to plant new ones just before the raining season starts.
2 . Construction and Infrastructure Development:
Summer time is the best time to go about your construction work, most construction companies look to the summer when working on projects. Work can be done efficiently without interruptions from the rain.
3 . Outdoor Activities:
As we all know it is the dry season that's most favourable for outdoor activities, I remember how some matches at the ATP tennis tournament this year was delayed due to rain. The summer period encourages outdoor activities such as picnic, festivals, events etc.
Disadvantages of the Dry Season:
1. Adverse Effects on Agriculture:
To everything good thing there's a disadvantage which includes excess of it. Too much dry season can affect water dependent crops which can lead to drought.
2 . Health Risks:
The summer season also comes with harmattan from December to January, this is a dusty wind which blows in from the Sahara desert. This can lead to respiratory issues and skin problems, thereby posing health challenges to the population.
3 . Global warming:
During the dry season alot of people set bushes on fire, there are reports of many fire outbreaks in the forest and buildings. This leads to loss of wildlife, life, properties and contributes to global warming.
Rainy Season:
The rainy season or winter, usually last from April to October, with it comes a relaxing relief from the scorching heat of the summer season, it characterises of regular rainfall which transforms the landscape into lush greenery. Winter, too, comes with its set of unique advantages and disadvantages.
Advantages of the Rainy Season:
1. Agricultural Prosperity:
The rainy(winter) season is a boon for agriculture. The coming of the rain helps the crop to flourish due to abundant water supply.
2 . Biodiversity and Ecosystem Health:
During the summer, many rivers and ponds had dried up affecting aquatic life, with the winter comes a replenishment of this water resources leading to a robust aquatic life.
Disadvantages of the Rainy Season:
1. Flooding and Erosion:
It is always during this period we hear sad news of flooding, this natural disaster affects lives properties and agriculture as they sweep everything in their path.
2 .Agricultural Challenges: Although rain is beneficial for many crops, excessive rainfall can be detrimental to others. Winter is a good time for most pest and crop diseases to flourish which affects our crops.
3 . Transportation and construction Disruptions:
Heavy rainfall can disrupt transportation networks, you can count how many times you had to find shelter from the rain while going somewhere. Sometimes some roads become flooded and inaccessible. Many construction work are often slowed down or abandoned during this period.
With my post above which I tried to be as informative as possible, you would know why I prefer the summer season to the winter season. But nonetheless we need both, if we had summer for a whole year there would surely be drought and starvation and too much rain which lead to health challenges. It is the balance between these two season that makes life more meaningful and amazing for all habitats.Conclusion
