Today is recognised globally as world hypertension day. Its a day we create awareness about the delirious effects of hypertension.

Hypertension or high blood pressure is a medical disorder characterised by increase in systolic blood pressure of more than 140mmhg or a diastolic blood pressure of 80mmhg or above. Its of two types, primary hypertension and secondary hypertension.

Primary hypertension: This makes up about 95% of hypertensive cases. There are no specific cause of this type, however, some research has link its onset to some factors like genetics, environmental factors, excess intake of salts, excessive consumption of alcohol etc

Secondary alcohol: This accounts for about 2 to 5% hypertensive cases. Its major cause is renal disease or adrenal hyper function. Its average onset is between the ages of 30 and 50.

Hypertension is often regarded as a silent killer, it can occur for several days without the knowledge of he host. Hence, frequent medical check up is needed Untreated hypertension can degenerate to fatal disease condition like stroke, ischemic shock, heart attack, Dementia, eye damage, kidney disease, peripheral vascular disease.

Hypertension is usually asymptomatic, people with predisposing factors are always advised to monitor their blood pressure level with sphygmomanometer, likewise those diagnosed of it.

Some of the general causes of hypertension includes

  1. Diabetes
  2. Obesity
  3. Excessive consumption of alcohol 
  4. Sedentary lifestyle
  5. Older individuals 
  6. Excess intake of salt
  7. Cardiovascular disease.                                                                                                                                               Always exercise regularly to stay fit, cut down on excess salt intake, try to maintain a healthy diet, and finally, always sort for medical help anytime you experience severe headache. sure, hypertension is indeed a silent killer. it needs to be guided against, by staying away from the risk factors like excess salt intake, excessive consumption of alcohol etc. sorry for the lost of your friends, I know it can be hard to take sometimes. periodic medical check up is needed once in a while in other to forestall sudden hypertensive crisis.

Personally, I am not hypertensive or hypotensive, but I have pressure surges (vegetovascular dystonia), it started almost 40 years ago, such was the army service ...
