The legacy of Asian playing in the premier league started with Ji sung Park who played for Manchester United for 7 seasons. He was from South Korea and played in the midfield position, the Korean couldn’t get enough playing time because Manchester United midfield was full of talents but despite that, we can ignore how good he is
He didn’t score many goals but we saw some incredible goals from the Korean but he is not who we want to talk about today also we can’t talk about the man of the moment Heung-min Son without mentioning the man who cleared the part for Asian to play in England.
Heung-min Son is one of the best attackers in England right now since he joined Tottenham under Mauricio Pochettino in 2015 which also made him the most expensive Asian player in the history of football. A total fee of €30 million was paid which surpasses Japan legend Nakata which As Roma paid in 2001 for the midfielder. Son has been impressive since he joined from Bayern Leverkusen. His first season was rough and he didn’t settle had he score just 4 goals in 28 matches.
Since then Heung-min Son has established himself in the first team and scored nothing less than 12 goals a season in the premier league and is always on the assist sheet, his career has been one thing to talk about as he was paired alongside Harry Kane. He was part of that great Tottenham team that played in the final of the champions league against Liverpool in the 2018/2019 campaign.
Son wasn’t just part of the team, his effort in the quarterfinal against Manchester city which he scored 3 goals in both legs knocking them out. He later went on to win the Pauska award in 2020 and also the premier league goal of the season. He score an amazing goal against Burnley in 2019 beating 7 opponent players as he runs from his own half. His coach then Mourinho said he reminded him of Brazil legend Nozario. That goal was named Tottenham goal of the decade.
In this just finished season H-m Som proved he is one of the best forward in England by winning the golden boot alongside Salah, they both scored 23 goals each but one thing we should all have in mind is Son scored 23 goals with no penalty which I would say very few players have done it in the history of the league. This is the biggest award he has gotten in the premier league so far and I hope to see more next season.
He had won the best football in Asia 7 times, Asian footballer of the year 3 times, Korean player of the year 6 times, premier league player of the month 3times, and 3 times Tottenham player of the season. At this point I think he deserves a status in both Tottenham and his Country, he is also the 3rd most successful Asian player in history.
