Four drug lords and one other arrested as NDLEA blows up large warehouse in Lagos and seizes N193billion worth of crack cocaine
Personnel from the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, blew up a large warehouse at a remote property in the Ikorodu area of Lagos where 1.8 tonnes (1,855 kilograms) of crack cocaine valued at more than two hundred and seventy-eight million two hundred and fifty thousand dollars were found ($278,250,000) equivalent of approximately one hundred and ninety-four billion, seven hundred and seventy-five million (N194, 775,000,000) naira in street value were confiscated.
NDLEA spokeswoman Femi Babafemi, who issued a statement on Monday, September 19, 2022, said the seizure appears to be the largest single cocaine seizure in the history of Nigeria's leading anti-drug agency.
"At least four drug lords, including a Jamaican and the warehouse manager, were arrested in the well-coordinated and intelligence-led operation, which lasted two days at various locations in Lagos state," the statement said.
The kingpins of the cocaine cartel in custody include: Messrs. Soji Jibril, 69, a native of Ibadan, Oyo State; Emmanuel Chukwu, 65, is from Ekwulobia, Anambra State; Wasiu Akinade, 53, from Ibadan, Oyo State; Sunday Oguntelure, 53, of Okitipupa, Ondo State, and Kelvin Smith, 42, of Kingston, Jamaica. They are all members of an international drug syndicate that the agency has been tracking since 2018
The warehouse at Olukuola Crescent 6, Solebo Estate, Ikorodu was raided on Sunday 18 September 2022, while the barons were apprehended at hotels and their hideouts in different parts of Lagos between Sunday night and Monday 19 September.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the Class A drugs were being stored in the housing development, from where the cartel attempted to sell them to buyers in Europe, Asia and other parts of the world. They were stored in 10 holdalls and 13 barrels.
