Aaron Ramsdale comes of age at the perfect time for Arsenal

  Aaron Ramsdale's relentless and intense pursuit by Arsenal in the summer of 2021 caused a lot of misunderstanding.

With Bournemouth and Sheffield United, he had been relegated in back-to-back seasons after allowing 125 goals in the process. Sure, his distribution was respectable, but does that really justify a high-paying transfer to one of the top clubs in English football?


Ramsdale started out strong in north London, joining the team as Arsenal began their first winning streak of the 2021–2022 campaign. Fans admired his charisma and self-assurance despite the fact that he appeared to be speaking at a time when personality and aura were valued qualities.


His ability to block shots, though, was still in doubt. You were always left wondering if Ramsdale could have done more on his end, if he had sidestepped one way too early, or if he had responded a crucial millisecond too slowly after Arsenal lost a loss.


Ramsdale had a strength, but it was also seen as a weakness. Was his flamboyant demeanor causing him to work himself up too much? Was his turmoil even a slight deterrent to his defenders?


Even halfway through Arsenal's current title defense, these were all still pertinent. But it seems like Ramsdale has finally changed course at this point.


On Sunday, the Gunners defeated rivals from north London Tottenham 2-0 to earn their first-ever victory in Spurs' $1 billion stadium. After a fast-paced first half, Arsenal had to persevere after the break to prevent the hosts from mounting a comeback.


Everyone contributed, but Ramsdale stood out more than anyone because he finally gave a highlight-reel performance that didn't only involve him rejoicing and kissing the badge. Even at that point, he got into a fight with Richarlison and was kicked by a Spurs fan after the game - profanities today, but the kind that will win him over the Arsenal supporters.


A goalkeeper would have been among the positional demands Mikel Arteta would have prioritized if he had been searching for ways to enhance his team (even if that was never going to happen). Ramsdale currently poses the threat of rendering such a concept obsolete and extinct.


With a group of opponents that have considerably more evident faults and chinks in their armor, Arsenal now leads the Premier League standings by eight points with the championship theirs to lose. A pleasant bonus would be if their goalkeeper improved and emerged as one of the best stoppers in the division.
