Professor Syed Humayun Akhter, director of the Dhaka University Earth Observatory, said a mild earthquake shook the India-Burma plate junction after 9:30 pm on Monday.
Its magnitude was 4.4 on the Richter scale, which is light in nature.
Mizanur Rahman, a professional assistant at the Meteorological Department's seismic observation center, said the quake's epicenter was 426 kilometers southeast of Dhaka and 122 kilometers southeast of Cox's Bazar.
At 9:38:32 pm, a magnitude 4.3 earthquake was recorded.
"The quake was felt near Cox's Bazar," he said.
Last May-June there were several earthquakes in Sylhet.
