The Memoir Of A Village Lad Part 3

In the last episode Mama Dina Doresi successfully gives birth to a bouncing baby boy she named Nzunzu. After clean up, the child starts to run a temperature.

The lady quickly took the baby and tried to breastfeed her once more. No, her pickin did not want to suckle. She lay the baby on the bed and quickly disappeared behind her house. In the banana plantation behind her house, she went ahead to collect the herbs she had planted there. She took a variety of five different herbs and reentered her tiny hut. Nzunzu was now breathing heavily. Dina Doresi knew this was not a good sign but went ahead to wash the medicine, put them in a pot and added some water. She then proceeded to light the fire in the hearth, an action she had repeatedly done in this house. She then placed the pot to balance on the three stones that held the pot in place and continued to care for the fire.

When the ingredients started boiling, she took some water on a piece of broken pot and after cooling she washed her boy. Suddenly, the temperature went down and the baby breathed normally. Dina let out aa sigh of relief and soothed the boy to sleep.

Life in this village then continued normally for this two beings. Dina would always carry the boy to the farm where she lay him under a shade as she worked on the farm. She would breastfeed him in the intervals of her working. Dina was a hard-working woman and she took great care of her son. The boy grew strong and healthy.

Nzunzu soon began to crawl and by nine months he began to move his first steps. This was to the pleasure of the determined man. The boy was plump and took after his father in all aspects. Mama lived for her son and loved her as she loved herself.

In the tenth month, the boy started to develop blister-like swellings on his body. Mama Dina Doresi did not know what this swellings were. Her antedotes seemed not to work this time. She was planning to visit Ugwamatso, the medicineman ten kilometres away when one swelling burst and out came a jiggerlike insect with a tail. Dina was amazed at what they were. She had not in her entire life ever seen such things.

These scabies mites were really painful and Dina Doresi had to look for a sharp thorn which she used to remove them. They were all over the body but meticulously, the lady removed them one by one. She then melted some fats which she applied on the body.

The lady wondered why her baby was subjected to these funny ailments. Was Nyasaye annoyed with her? Will He take this one the way he had taken his siblings? The lady had no answer to this.

Her moosings brought her to his man. His name was Samuel Esau Keya Kegodi. He was a masculine man and quite energetic. Keya had always stalked her as she went to the river to fetch water. The beautiful lady would always play hard to get.

She remembered the time she poured a pot full of water on the unfortunate man. Drenched like a chick rained on, the handsome man escaped into the bush escorted by the giggles of the beautiful Dina with her mates. Mama Dina laughed to herself as she recalled this.
