Arling Holland left the German club Borussia Dortmund and joined the English club Manchester City in the 2022-23 season. The Norwegian striker played his 100th match in the City jersey today. Holland celebrated the milestone match by scoring a goal. His team also won. The reigning champions opened the 2024-25 season with a 2-0 win over hosts Chelsea in their first big game of the season at Stamford Bridge. Mateo Kovacic scored City's other goal.
He scored his 91st goal in the Holland City jersey in the 18th minute. Jeremy Doku's extended pass from the left edge deflected off Bernardo Silva's feet to Holland. After knocking out the two Chelsea defenders Levi Colwill and Mark Cukurea who were clinging to him, Holland evaded goalkeeper Robert Sanchez and put the ball into the net.
Holland, however, had to put the celebrations on hold for a while after scoring in the first game of the season in the Premier League. Whether or not Silva was offside at the time of the pass was being reviewed by VAR. In the end, the goal stood.
Chelsea had the ball in the City net once at the end of the first half. Cole Palmer's powerful shot was parried by Elson but fell to the feet of Nicholas Jackson. Jackson put the ball into the net but it was ruled out for offside.
City's goal was disallowed. In the 65th minute, Nico Lewis scored after receiving the ball from Holland. But before that, the goal was canceled due to Holland's foul, the Norwegian star was shown a yellow card by the referee.
City got the goal to seal the win in the 84th minute. Kovacic scored against his old club with a superb shot from 25 yards.
