Universal adult suffrage is simply a situation whereby all adults whether male or female are given equal voting rights. It is a system of voting during election into political positions which we can say carries every bonafide adult in a society along. They call it equal rights. It is a system adopted by a series of developing nations to make the people participate and feel their effects in government. They believe they have a voice and choice but is it really helping their situation?
The states who apply this method of election are still highly underdeveloped according to my own research and this plays down to the fact that politicians have seen the lacuna in this system of voting and have abused it. Religion, tribalism and racism is a cardinal factor hindering the electoral process of most of these countries. The politicians recognize this and use it to their own advantage. When a religious leader is met during an election campaign it is obvious the politician is not only getting one vote but almost that of the entire congregation. Same is applicable to traditional rulers too whom the people believe are sacred creatures whose judgment and decisions must be respected, but in fact it isn't the same. These days in many developing states, the political class decides who heads the traditional leadership seat and this is done to aid their political career.
Who really is an adult? And who is a rational mind. Is someone who can't think for himself/herself worthy to be called an adult? The herd mentality is a syndrome I believe will take ages to overcome, people just follow the number. Well I can say "to him who has more will be given to him" it seems some humans' brains are wired that way and many hardly think for themselves. When you use some content on social media or other platforms, a lot of valuable content gets little engagement while content of maybe an influential person or even organic generated engagement gets further interaction. I weep within myself sometimes when I see people clapping during speeches atimes when even they know the point the speaker is raising doesn't make any sense. Who bewitched humanity into this.
It is high time people start to think for themselves and realize the decision they make today can ruin them tomorrow and forever. The political office is a sensitive one. I am not in support of universal adult suffrage but not everyone has the capacity of adult. To my understanding I believe adulthood connotes taking rational actions and standing behind its consequences. These developing nations have crazy poverty and crime rates due to their inability to take the right action and the society and world at large suffers the consequence. Elections should be made something only rational people should indulge in. Yes there will be a cry of foul but their laughter never made any difference. I have seen poverty at the forefront and I know how politicians buy votes with a cup of rice and few cash notes. If you haven't stepped into the river you won't know how deep it is. The decisions of the citizens of the undeveloped nations is keeping them in that condition.
