He is nick named "Maharaj". Sourav had his schooling and college education from St.Xavier's School and college in Calcutta .He was coached by Debu Mitra ,Gopal Bose and others .His elder brother Snehashis Ganguly was a good Ranji Player for Bengal .Sourav played in the Ranji Trophy for the first time against Delhi in 1991. Ganguly was selected in the Indian team for the tour of Australia in 1992 . He played in only one One day International match . Ganguly made his debut against England at Lord's on 20th June , 1996 and scored a hundred .His highest test score is 173 against Sri Lanka at Mumbai and his batting average is above 50. Ganguly is more successful in One Day Cricket .He has played some match winning innings for his country at Karachi, Dhaka ,Shariah , and Toronto. His highest score is 183 against Sri Lanka .
