Nelson Mandela is one of the most popular leaders and statesmen in the world. He is the father of the South African nation and former president. To the world he is a great undisputed leader and the proverbial man of the anti-apartheid movement. He has fought all his life for the eradication of racism and national unity. As a result of his tireless struggle, the neglected and oppressed people got a taste of freedom, equality and liberation.
After graduating from school, Mandela enrolled in the Bachelor of Arts course at Fort Hare University. At the end of his first year at the university, Mandela became involved in a movement called the Student Parliament against the racist behavior of the university authorities. Authorities expelled him from Fort Hare as punishment. He later joined Johannesburg-based law firm Whitkin Sedelsky & Edelman as a clerk. While working at the institute, he received a bachelor's degree in distance learning from the University of South Africa. He later began his undergraduate studies in law at the University of Whitewater stand. At the time, he was living in Alexandria, a city north of Johannesburg.
While in the filthy prison cell of Robben Island, Mandela contracted tuberculosis. In his last years, he contracted a lung infection. He died on December 5, 2013 at his home in Johannesburg after a long three-month stay at Pretoria Medical Clinic. He was 95 years old. After a 10-day state funeral, he was buried in the family cemetery in his hometown of Kunu in the Eastern Cape on December 15. Nelson Mandela is the source of inspiration for the liberating people of the world. The ideals of his non-violent politics and his struggle against racism will keep him forever in the hearts of the people of the world.
