The 40-year-old British helicopter flying in Ukraine

According to information obtained by the BBC, a military helicopter that the UK government handed to Ukraine was employed during the Falklands War more than 40 years ago. The Ukrainian military claims that the aircraft will aid in the fight against Russia despite its age.

The helicopter swoops and twists as it flies low over southern Ukraine, following the terrain's contours. The crew scans the horizon from the cockpit and an open side door, on the lookout for any dangers.

We are the first reporters to get access to the aircraft since they were handed to Ukraine a few months ago. Britain has provided Ukraine two Sea King helicopters. The threat of Russian missiles is not far away, and there is an atmosphere of seriousness and purpose within.

 

 

The four-man crew, despite this, takes pleasure in showcasing the new helicopter. They explain to us how crucial it is to them on the battlefield, where it is used to move soldiers, rescue injured, and conduct reconnaissance.

However, why is Britain providing Ukraine with such ageing helicopters, some of which have been in service for almost forty years?

However, the UK has not handed any of its Typhoon fighter planes to Ukraine because it does not have enough spares, and training Ukrainian pilots to fly them would take too much time. There are also more general concerns that supplying jets may intensify the fight.

Instead, the UK decided to send them two unarmed, slow-moving helicopters that are no longer in service with the Royal Navy after they retired the Sea Kings years ago. One of them is so ancient that it even served in the 1982 Falklands War, when it had a significant role.
