Investing in a new token can be quite a risky business, particularly if you don't have the technical knowledge of things to look out for that might indicate whether that token will survive long term.
I believe even with the continuous growth and widespread popularity in the usage of crypto currencies across the world, there's still a lot of deliberate misinformation aimed at targeting unsuspecting individuals to invest in a project that might not be viable long term.
In most cases these projects are supported publicly by either popular figures from other industries or even popular names in the crypto world.
What this does is to try to give some sort of credibility to the token. Mr A who's a billionaire is reported to have invested X amount of money in a token, Mr A gives speeches on why he sees this token as the future of crypto currencies and uses emotional connection to the public. Unsuspecting Mr B who doesn't really understand much about the new token and the project behind it. Mr B only sees a familiar face investing in the token and decides to go for it.
Six months down the line, the token is useless or isn't what it was claimed to be. Mr B eventually finds out that it was all a scam all along but now it's too late. I believe this scenario as well as other complex scams will continue to occur as long as misinformation continues. It is always in your best interest to do your research and base them from multiple sources.
