Introduction

Arthritis is a disease that mostly affects the joints of a human being which then causes pain, Stiffness and Inflammation in that region. It can affect multiple joints in the body and there are numerous types of arthritis and all comes with different causes and treatments.

 

A popular known type of arthritis is the Osteoarthritis (OA) and many others include:

 

- Psoriatic arthritis (PsA)

- Rheumatoid arthritis (RA)

- Gout

Arthritis symptoms are known to develop over time but sometimes they happen suddenly. The peak age where people develop rheumatoid arthritis is between age 35 and 50. However, there have been reports of it affecting children, teenagers and younger adults.

 

On the other hand, Osteoarthritis Arthritis (OA) develops between the age of 50 - 60 years. But studies have shown that some women experience this type of Arthritis in their 40s.

 

What causes arthritis?

Arthritis may be caused by the following;

 

- Age

- Injuries

- Wear and tear of a joint due to overuse

- Autoimmune Disorders

- Muscle Weakness

- Obesity

- Genes or family history

 

What are the symptoms of arthritis?

Swelling, Pain and stiffness of the joints are the most common symptoms of arthritis. The pain mostly occur in the morning when a person gets out of bed or standing up after a long rest.

Other symptoms of Arthritis include:

 

- Scraping or Grating feeling on the knees

- Bony Growths in fingers

- Limited range of motion that sometimes disappears after some slight movements

- Muscle Weakness around the joint

- clicking or popping with bending

 

How is arthritis treated?

Like I said above, different types of Arthritis have different treatments but it all depend on the patient. The treatments aim to reduce pain and it can work faster depending on the type of patient.

 

The treatment must involve the following;

 

- mobility assistance devices, such as canes or walkers

- regular exercise

- occupational therapy

- medications and supplements

- physical therapy

- weight loss, if needed

- nutrient-rich diet

- heat and cold compresses
