The European Central Bank warns: the “digital euro” could drain around €700 billion from bank deposits

European Central Bank Sounds the Alarm

The European Central Bank (ECB) has warned that the introduction of the “digital euro” could lead to a significant withdrawal of deposits from commercial banks — a move that might destabilize the eurozone’s financial system if not carefully managed.

🔹Risks to the Traditional Banking System

According to the ECB’s latest report, while the digital euro could enhance payment efficiency and innovation, it also poses a potential threat to banks’ liquidity. Consumers might be tempted to transfer large portions of their funds from traditional accounts into digital euro wallets, reducing banks’ lending capacity and weakening overall market liquidity.

🔹Preventive Measures Under Consideration

ECB officials stated they are exploring precautionary measures, such as setting limits on how much individuals and companies can hold in digital euros. This approach aims to prevent large-scale withdrawals from the conventional banking system once the currency is launched.

🔹Balancing Innovation and Stability

The central bank emphasized that the project is not only about financial innovation but also about striking a delicate balance between creating a modern, secure payment system and maintaining financial stability across European markets.

🔹Challenges of Trust and Implementation

Experts note that the success of the digital euro will largely depend on public confidence in the ECB’s monetary policy and on its ability to reassure markets that the digital euro will complement — not replace — existing bank deposits.
