In one of the largest cryptocurrency seizures in history, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) announced on Tuesday the confiscation of more than $14 billion worth of Bitcoin (BTC) as part of an international investigation into a massive financial fraud network operating across Cambodia, Hong Kong, and Singapore.
According to a report by The Associated Press, Phung Sivan, the Cambodian head of the criminal network, was arrested along with several senior executives on charges of money laundering, wire fraud, and operating fraudulent investment platforms that targeted hundreds of thousands of victims across Asia, Europe, and North America.
🔹 Case Details
Investigations revealed that the group operated fake investment schemes in artificial intelligence, blockchain, and cryptocurrency trading, luring investors through online platforms before diverting funds into hidden Bitcoin wallets using advanced mixing and obfuscation services.
Authorities identified more than 220,000 blockchain transactions connected to the operation, ultimately seizing 310,000 Bitcoin, valued at over $14 billion USD.
🔹 International Cooperation
The crackdown resulted from a joint operation between the FBI, the Cambodian Cybercrime Bureau, Interpol, and Singaporean authorities.
A DOJ spokesperson stated:“This seizure demonstrates the United States’ commitment to pursuing digital crimes across borders. No matter how sophisticated the technology, we will track down and hold criminals accountable.”
🔹 Impact on the Crypto Market
News of the seizure caused short-term volatility in the cryptocurrency market.
Bitcoin’s price briefly dropped to around $111,200 before rebounding to $112,300 as investors absorbed the impact.
Analysts suggest that such enforcement actions may actually boost long-term investor confidence, as they show that authorities are increasingly capable of tackling large-scale crypto-related crimes.
🔹 Official Statements
U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a statement:
“Cryptocurrencies will not serve as safe havens for criminals. The same technology they use to hide money is the one we’ll use to expose and recover it.”The National Bank of Cambodia also confirmed its cooperation with U.S. authorities, adding that “the investigation is ongoing, and additional local intermediaries may soon be identified.”
🔹 Conclusion
The $14 billion Bitcoin seizure marks a turning point in the global fight against cyber-enabled financial crimes.
Experts believe this operation could pave the way for stricter crypto regulations in both the United States and Asia over the coming months, reinforcing the message that digital transparency and accountability are now global priorities.
