The way the Netherlands responded to the history of the war of independence Indonesia
Indonesia proclaimed its independence at 17 August 1945 after coming within the powers of the Netherlands East Indies trading company and the Government of Netherlands for 350 years, as well as Japan's occupation during World War II.
After the proclamation of the independence of Indonesia, Netherlands waged a war to restore colonial rule over Indonesia. The victims of the war, including Indonesia which killed without justice, killing 300,000 people of Indonesia compared with about 6,000 casualties in the Netherlands.
In Indonesia, national identity is built around anti-colonial sentiment. History of the atrocities of the Netherlands are taught and discussed. Indonesia public regard for developments in the Netherlands when a court there in 2011 sets the Netherlands should apologize for the massacre of the year 1947 in Rawagede and when pictures of execution to the forefront in the year 2012. Indonesia violence against Indonesia in the Netherlands is less emphasized, but not ignored.
How do I respond to this history of the Netherlands?
As a social scientist and Director of the study of the Netherlands and the Flemish at the University of Michigan, I posed this question in my writings and lectures me about issues of inclusion in these areas speak Netherlands.
Answers to that question: the Netherlands ignore the sacrifice of the people of Indonesia. This is the reason.
#### Freedom paid
1945-1949 Indonesia war of independence ended with the signing of the Treaty of independence that is mediated by the international community that Indonesia took over the Netherlands East Indies government debt. Indonesia pay Netherlands 4.3 billion guilders for its independence. The payments continued until 2002.
Netherlands, as a Western European nation thus rebuilding of his country after World War II with the Marshall Plan Loans from the United States, plus the amount pretty much from Indonesia, which is also equally organize themselves from the effects of war .
The historic struggle for Justice for Indonesia continues today. One expression of the struggle that is seen on the national day of remembrance in the Netherlands every May 4, the day when the Netherlands remembers the people who were killed in World War II and afterward. That day involving the ceremony with two minutes observe copyright and the laying of wreaths by the King and Queen of the Netherlands.
The people of Indonesia who fight against the Netherlands and were killed in the war of ' 45-' 49 is not commemorated in this ceremony, even though the Netherlands officially recognize them as part of the Netherlands at that time.

#### Anniversary exclusive
Many of the protests against the national day of remembrance because it ignores the other victims. Indonesia is not the only victim of being ignored in the day observe.
It took several decades, for example, for the victims of the Holocaust is remembered for the Netherlands.
A movement in the Netherlands called "No may 4 for my" protested Indifferent victims of Indonesia from ritual warnings while the murderers they are remembered. Among the Indonesia people's killer was a former Nazi Netherlands, sent to Indonesia after World War II to fight for the Netherlands in the war of independence.
#### Recognized the independence of Indonesia
So who is, and who is not, is celebrated on the anniversary of the Netherlands?
The key to the answer is this: the Netherlands does not officially recognize Indonesia's independence in 1945 – the Netherlands recognizes the year 1949 as the Treaty of sovereignty.
This is the reason why the Netherlands cannot recognized the independence of Indonesia 1945: If the Netherlands acknowledges that year, it means the country has attacked a sovereign country after World War II for the purpose of collectivity. And then, the massacre, which was at the Netherlands referred to eufimistis as "the actions of law enforcement," cannot be said "law enforcement action" but is more accurately referred to as war crimes, as described in the book to be published by the Ady Setyawan and Marjolein Van Pagee.

#### Military action
According to the official story of the Netherlands, however, Indonesia is "Netherlands" for "law enforcement action", and thus killing your own people is not a war crime, but law enforcement is wrong.
It's just that law enforcers in such action is not a police officer but a soldier who served in the military of the Netherlands.
The publication "De Doden Tellen" ("count of the dead") released the national day of Remembrance Committee of the Netherlands shows no official story Netherlands his solid performances. These publications describe the conflict as a "law enforcement action" while simultaneously using the language of "conquest" of the military.
"During the so-called law enforcement actions,, conquering the Netherlands different areas and States them as the Netherlands territory again," written in such publications.
#### Apartheid
Netherlands want to count the people they killed as part of the Netherlands, in order not to be considered a war crime, while at the same time not to commemorate their deaths.
Behind this exception is segregation on the basis of race.
Netherlands colonialism does not give citizenship to the people of Indonesia. Now, 70 years later, the colonial apartheid that separates, harmful, degrading and one race in the interest of other races are applied after the death, on the anniversary of the Netherlands. On the day commemorating the victims of the civil war, civilian casualties Indonesia not commemorated because they do not have citizenship under colonial rule.
The Chairman of the Committee for National Memorial Day Netherlands, Gerdi Verbeet, admit it when he said that "those who do not have Netherlands Passport does not remember at this point."
There is further evidence of racial exclusion policy on the anniversary of Netherlands: victims of Indonesia in World War II is also not celebrated.
Although the numbers are not verified, civilian casualties of World War II in Indonesia generally expected to reach 4 million people. Official documents that count of the dead is celebrated on its list for the anniversary of the Netherlands record of about 20,000 people, the differences are stunning. Netherlands get very different figures because they exclude all the natives. Millions of people disappear on the anniversary of the Netherlands.
Counting the dead
Netherlands is a Memorial Day story about the value of human life, about who counts, who doesn't and who can determine the hitung-hitungan.
Four million chocolate skinned civilian casualties in World War II is not counted; 300,000 victims of brown-skinned "law enforcement action" they are also not counted.
And in a sad twist of in this story, just one group of people counted brown skin: Indonesia soldiers who fell, fighting on the side of the Netherlands during the war of rekolonisasi. They are seen as victims of the offender by the invaders after the colonial history of the exploitation of the centuries.
Colonial thought as a form of racial supremacy is never far away in the Netherlands. In Indonesia, this took the form of assuming the right to enslave people, kill them, and taking their land for profit.
Educator and author of Gloria Wekker Netherlands Surinam descent, in his book "White Innocence," analyzes the Netherlands colonial thinking as an exception based on race which produced the culture of white people are so blind to the Netherlands the many forms of racism today.
Netherlands racism evident in the fact that this country has the worst record in the job opportunities for people of color in Europe other than Sweden.
In another instance, the second largest political party, the party for freedom, place an ad campaign in the United Kingdom and the Netherlands language mendehumanisasi the Muslims in that country. The ad stated that their religion the same as "discrimination," "injustice" and "killing in the name of honour," among other attributes.
A legislator warned about the dangers of mixing the blood of the Netherlands and the non-Netherlands. Just last year, the people of Netherlands Antillean and Surinamese descent-was banned to attend the commemoration of May 4, if they speak publicly about the history of slavery in the Netherlands colonies slavery Netherlands place of their ancestors.

###### Netherlands version of Santa Claus, Sinterklaas, or St. Nicholas, and her black sidekicks ' Zwarte Piet ' or ' Black Piet.
Reminder of colonialism and slavery was the most widely known Netherlands come every year in the form of "Piet black," caricature of the black maid Sinterklaas on the most important traditions of this nation.
#### Share memory
Elizabeth Eckford, one of the first African-American students in the school who have been separated, say "true reconciliation can only happen when we honestly acknowledge the painful past of the Commons."
In the Netherlands, this message is reflected in the voice of protesters "no may 4 for me", who want the dead counted but found a culture that is blind to his own faults and do not want to create the shared memory.
Build shared memory can be started today, with the recognition of the Netherlands about independence day of Indonesia and Indonesia's War Memorial.
