Today I'm going to change course completely to talk about Carlos Ruiz Zafón and in particular his novel The Prisoner of Heaven (by irony of fate he died last year at the same age as Larsson: 55 years old).
The Prisoner of Heaven is the third novel in the saga The Cemetery of Forgotten Books that made him popular around the world and which consists of The Shadow of the Wind (2001), The Angel's Game (2008), The Prisoner of Heaven (2011)** and finally **The Labyrinth of the Spirits (2016).
Despite the growing popularity of his novels and the numerous offers received to take his books to the cinema, Zafón always refused.
The book takes place temporarily in the last part of the first Francoist period in 1954 with a repression attenuated but always in force. And with a gloomy and frightened Barcelona.
Zafón describes his characters in great detail, from the owner of the Sempere bookstore to the sinister character who visits him in his bookstore at the beginning of the book.
Everything has dark overtones: the characters, the city, a communion of sadness and melancholy seems to flood every detail.
The book is divided into five parts with an initial illustration of Barcelona in black and white in which the past and a present that is very similar to it seem to converge.
Apart from the plot and intrigue, the book is a tribute to books, to literature itself.
The first novel of this saga La Sombra del Viento was the one that gave Carlos Ruiz Zafón true worldwide notoriety, since it sold more than 15 million copies worldwide, translated into numerous languages and selected by a jury of writers some years later in 2007 as one of the 100 best books published in Spanish language in the last quarter of a century.
He was never a prolific writer like those who regularly and methodically write "a book a year". Writing each book took a long time. In fact, the saga El Cementerio de los Libros Olvidados with its four books took him no less than 15 years.
As he confessed in an interview, he divided his books into layers and compared them to the making of a movie: the initial part in the production of the book, then the gathering of the elements that would form it and, at the end, the actual plot. Whose development would change so many times.
His work is completed with Marina, an "independent" novel, so to speak, in the sense of not being part of any saga, and the "Trilogy of the Mist" composed of The Prince of the Misk (1993),The Palace of Midnight (1994) and The Lights of Septembe (1995) written at the beginning of his career as a writer with a little more continuity.
In the 2020 year of his death, a compilation of all his short stories was published, entitled La Ciudad de Vapor.
The book begins in the Sempere's bookstore (father and son) when, faced with the economic problems derived from the difficulty of selling books, Daniel's father (Sempere) has an idea to fix the Christmas display case and goes away leaving his son alone to take care of the business.
At that moment a sinister character arrives at the shop and buys a book, breaks it three times its value and asks the bookseller to deliver it to a person who works in the same bookstore.
This person is none other than Joaquín, his employee, who upon receiving the news decides to tell them the whole story.
A story that begins in the Castle of Montjuic located in the mountain of the same name (used as a prison by the Franco regime).
A self-centered villain who keeps alive a prisoner (whom his cellmates nicknamed The Prisoner of Heaven) to write his own biography, friendship, grudges, a treasure obtained with the crimes committed during the civil war and an escape in the best style of The Count of Monte Cristo.
