May Day: What Buhari Told Tinubu Ahead Of Swearing-In

On May 1st, Nigerian workers celebrated May Day, a day set aside to honor the contributions of workers to the development of the country. During this celebration, President Muhammadu Buhari gave a valedictory speech, in which he urged the incoming administration of President-elect, Bola Tinubu, to treat workers with utmost respect.

It is expected that Tinubu will be sworn in as the next President of Nigeria on May 29th, as declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), following his victory in the presidential election held on February 25th, 2023.

Buhari emphasized the need for the incoming leadership to focus on socio-economic development, which should be driven by the four pillars of the decent work agent to promote jobs and enterprises. 

He also stressed the importance of guaranteeing workers' rights and extending social protection policies.

Represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, Buhari suggested that the incoming administration should find ways to promote social dialogue for consensus building among workers, while maintaining a sound national industrial relations system.

President-elect Tinubu's pledge to provide a living wage for workers signal a commitment to prioritize the welfare of Nigerian workers, which is a significant step towards sustainable development.

Tinubu is set to be sworn in as Nigeria’s next president on May 29th, after winning the presidential election held on February 25th, 2023.

Buhari emphasized the importance of socio-economic development, driven by the four pillars of decent work, promoting jobs and enterprises, guaranteeing workers' rights, and extending social protection policies. 

The outgoing leader also suggested that the incoming administration must promote social dialogue to build consensus among workers while maintaining a sound national industrial relations system. 

Buhari stressed that workers’ rights, combined with socio-economic justice, create a happy workplace.

In response, President-elect Tinubu pledged to provide more than a minimum wage to Nigerian workers, offering a “living wage” to improve their quality of life.
