The All-Russian memorial action "Blockade Bread", held from January 18 to 27 in all regions of the country, launched the Year of Memory and Glory. This act reminded us of the courage of the residents of Leningrad, who survived the terrible siege of the millionth city by the German occupiers. The ordeal lasted 872 days, during which, according to various estimates, up to one and a half million people died, more than 90% of them from hunger. Almost four thousand citizens died of exhaustion every day. Scary numbers.
By December 1941, the ration of bread baked from rye and oat flour with the addition of pine needles, cake, and cellulose had decreased for city employees, the elderly and children to 125 grams per day. Workers, firefighters and military guards received a little more: 250 – 300. There was no electricity or water in the besieged city... but Leningrad lived and survived. Despite the insidious plans of the enemy.

In memory of these tragic days, actions dedicated to the steadfastness and heroism of Leningrad residents were held in all educational and cultural institutions. And also to the main symbol of those days – a black hunk of blockade bread. The volunteer guys handed out the 125 grams to passers-by on the street, talked about the Road of Life, handed leaflets. Courage Lessons were held in schools, bread cards were shown, the famous seventh symphony (Leningrad) by Dmitry Shostakovich sounded. And there were also piercing poems by Olga Bergholz, excerpts from the works of Daniil Granin and Ales Adamovich. And at all the events there was bread baked already from good flour and not as bitter in taste as during the blockade. But these pieces have become a connecting thread between the children of war and today's teenagers.
A touching program was prepared for students by employees of the city Palace of Culture. During the full house, the actors recited poems from the stage, fragments from the memories of Leningrad residents who survived the blockade, nine lines about the death from Tanya Savicheva's diary were voiced, and Levitan's unique voice thundered triumphantly over the vaults of the hall: "The city of Leningrad is completely liberated from the enemy blockade and from the barbaric shelling of the enemy...". Then the children watched the heartfelt and truthful feature film "We looked Death in the face", based on real events, telling about a children's dance group that gave about three thousand concerts on the war fronts. And another amazing figure. During the difficult years of the blockade, 95 thousand children were born. In order for the kids to survive, a farm of three purebred cows was organized at the Pediatric Institute of the city – so the children could get fresh milk, because in most cases young mothers did not have it. Even in such difficult conditions, people lived, worked, loved…
