Which is the best choice: impulsively or rationally?

Do I want or do I need? How important is it when making a decision? The study of human behavior leads to interesting conclusions. There are people who live according to their needs. Then they become effective, mature, and get things done. There are also those who live in the moment and fulfill their needs spontaneously, here and now. There is no planning or thinking here. And if reflection comes, they wonder if they should do it. The choice depends on whether they have such a strong hunger for something that they must immediately satisfy it, or they are able to consider what is good and necessary for them.

Within each of us there is an unbridled beast worth training. He wants to pursue his goals, such as: the struggle for survival, satisfying hunger, reproduction of the species. Of course, we humans act not only for such reasons, but sometimes we can show reactions that are characteristic of such a “pet”. When we don't know how to manage it, we can easily get into trouble.

A simple example: returning from work, we pass a pastry shop, which tempts with delicacies, and in the summer - with cold ice cream. If we operate on an impulse level, we will go in and buy sweets almost every time we pass by. If we know what we need, we will go to another store and buy fresh fruit, and from time to time we will buy treats from the pastry.

Our ancient ancestors acted spontaneously when they had to fight to survive, when they were attacked by a wild animal or an enemy from another tribe. Then it was important to adequately respond to the situation and its speed. You had to live in the present moment, receive immediate benefits, be able to build relationships with fellow tribesmen in order to survive until the next day.

Human needs can and will remain the same, but the context of modern life does not. We don't need to hunt and search for food all day. We are surrounded by shops and restaurants. In winter, we can live comfortably with tap water and warm radiators. Yet in these new, good conditions, we continue to act as before - under the influence of stress and short-term impulse. We over-buy at sales, don't eat healthy, don't save up for retirement, and so on.

These are seemingly small things, but making many irrational decisions can lose us. We lose control of him and release the Labrador when he wants it, not us. Self-control is needed in all areas of life. It is worth creating reality the way we need it, not the way we want it. In other words, it's good to be in control of your whims, not obey them.

In this context, let's ask, is it to tame the animal within us, or is it better to train it? We can choose a rational mind system or an automatic and impulsive system.

It is better to avoid situations where our irrational mind is hungry. We will succeed if we design our environment in such a way that when the impulse and myopia system takes control of us, it has nothing to draw from. An example diet is here to help illustrate the situation. If we want to lose a few pounds, don't store chocolate in cupboards. When we crave something sweet, we'll eat a honey sandwich, not a packet of cookies or chocolate.

There will be nothing to use the system called “I want it now”. Of course, almost always and everywhere one should be guided by common sense, and the discussed "animal" in us will be more polite. If he does get a prank, then it will probably only be from time to time, and nothing serious will happen because of it. In the best case, we will start training again in order to act not impulsively, but rationally.
