Many parents believe that praise is essential in parenting. In theory, this should help strengthen the self-esteem of the smallest. Is it really?

Should children be praised?

The process of raising a child is a long and often winding path full of pitfalls. His indispensable element for many parents is to praise their children. In this way, they express their pride in their baby's achievements and want to boost their self-esteem.

Praise does not build strength or confidence. The child needs confirmation from us that he is seen and heard, but this is different from praise. First of all, it is important to increase the child's self-esteem. Praise is kind of evaluative and doesn't help people, but the opposite of self-esteem.

Self-respect is built on accepting the child, listening carefully to what he says, believing him, taking him seriously, taking time for him, being interested in his point of view, his experience.

If a child shows a drawing to parents, he expects praise. This behavior can hardly be caused by the baby's own initiative. This is the result of being praised for something earlier and now waiting for a new portion. It is not advisable to give such assessments to children. Especially in preschool age, when it is difficult for them to distinguish between the assessment of a specific activity or behavior.
