Russian missile reportedly struck a residential apartment block in the city, according to Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi.
One of the heaviest strikes on the city's civilian infrastructure since the beginning of Russia's invasion last year, at least four people have been killed and more than 30 have been injured in a Russian missile attack on a residential apartment complex in the western Ukrainian city of Lviv, according to officials.
Ihor Klymenko, Ukraine's interior minister, confirmed on Thursday that the attack that levelled the third and fourth floors of an apartment complex claimed the lives of at least four individuals. He claimed that rescuers were trying to reach people who were still buried under the rubble.
Later, the Interior Ministry of Ukraine revised the figure to 32, including one kid. According to the emergency services, they were able to evacuate 64 people and rescue seven individuals from the wrecked structure.
The mayor of Lviv, Andriy Sadovyi, stated on his Telegram channel that "this is the biggest attack on Lviv's civilian infrastructure since the beginning" of Russia's invasion and that rescuers were trying to "clear debris and pull out all the dead" from the building.
Ukraine's air force said that Russia targeted Lviv with 10 Kalibr missiles fired from the Black Sea, adding that seven of the ten missiles were shot down.
Early on Thursday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the incident, expressed sympathy to the families of those slain in Lviv, and pledged a "strong" response "to the enemy" via social media.
In Zelenskyy's tweet, he included a video demonstrating the degree of damage to a Lviv building.
Maksym Kozytskyi, the regional governor of Lviv, also shared a 13-second video clip depicting a broad, curved, four-story apartment complex with some of the upper levels missing or in ruins.
Prior to now, Kozytskyi stated that a crucial piece of infrastructure had been damaged without offering any other information.
