At the Pindi Cricket Stadium in Rawalpindi today for the 17th game of the eighth season of the Pakistan Premier League (PSL), Peshawar Zalmi beat Karachi Kings by 24 runs as Kings failed to reach the 198-run goal set for them.
The Kings were limited to 173-8 in 20 overs while chasing a target of 198 runs.
The Kings scored 55 runs in the first powerplay despite losing Adam Rossington, who scored 15 runs in eight balls.
Tayyab Tahir, who had previously hit a fifty, was caught behind the stumps in the seventh over of the game, but Azmatullah Omarzai made a key dismissal.
Two wickets fell in rapid succession as Karachi attempted to boost the ante, giving Peshawar the advantage over Karachi. Shoaib Malik (1) and Irfan Khan (4) left the hut without making a major impact.
Matthew Wade, who batted first, scored 53 runs in 41 balls before being dismissed by Mujeeb Ur Rahman. With Wade's departure, the Kings lost their direction and frequently lost wickets.
Imad Wasim, the club's captain, achieved an unbroken 57 runs in 30 balls but was unable to lead his side to victory.
Each of Aamer Jamal and Omarzai collected three wickets, and Mujeeb took two.
Earlier in the vital match, Peshawar Zalmi had given Karachi Kings a 198-run target.
Zalmi was on the ropes for much of the first half of the innings but still managed to score 197-5 in the allowed 20 overs.
After removing Babar Azam and Mohammad Haris in the opening over of the game, pacer Mohammad Amir gave the Kings a fantastic start. For a duck, both hitters were out. After a carelessly executed flip shot, Saim Ayub (1) was caught at deep square leg, giving Amir his third wicket of the game. But, in his first encounter, Haseebullah Khan, a rookie player, scored an incredible fifty points to help his side turn things around. Before being bowled by Tabraiz Shamsi, the left-hander hit 50 runs in 29 balls, including four fours and three sixes.
Rovman Powell, who blasted the bowlers to every part of the stadium, dashed Karachi's hopes of holding Peshawar to a low score. Six fours and four sixes were part of a spectacular 34-ball 64 for him.
Tom Kohler-Cadmore made a significant contribution as well, scoring 56 runs off 45 balls. Five fours and three sixes were part of his inning. With stats of 4-26 in four overs, Amir was Karachi's preferred bowler.
It should be mentioned that Karachi Kings chose to bowl first against Peshawar Zalmi after winning the toss.
Following seven games and the loss, the Kings are now in fifth place on the points chart with four points.
Zalmi, meanwhile, are in fourth position with six points following the same number of games.
Zalmi prevailed by two runs in a thrilling match in the PSL 8 opener between the two teams.
