ISLAMABAD: By enhancing essential infrastructure and services, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) is assisting the Punjab government in creating sustainable and habitable mid-level towns.
According to a brief film produced by the ADB on Friday, this includes Sialkot, a bustling commercial centre famed for producing footballs and high-quality medical tools.
It claimed that through supporting urban development, the ADB was enhancing Sialkot's competitiveness, job creation, and overall quality of life.
The city reportedly produces more than 70% of the footballs used worldwide. If you've ever played football, there's a good chance the ball was created in Pakistan's Sialkot.
Additionally, the city provides footballs for the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup in Doha.
Sialkot is a thriving business centre recognised for producing surgical instruments in addition to football.
We have foreign clients, said Khwaja Masood Akhtar, chairman of the Forward Group and Sialkot Airport. They visit for business meetings as well as to tour our factory. Therefore, it is crucial that the city's infrastructure, including its roads, railroads, airports, and dry ports, be in good condition.
It was emphasised that the ADB is assisting the growth of places like Sialkot so that public services can keep up with the increased demand.
Improvements are being made to the water infrastructure to ensure a steady supply, and sanitation and sewage systems are also being repaired.
Over 450 tonnes of rubbish are efficiently collected daily with the assistance of the ADB, and waste management best practises are taught to local populations.
Farkhanda Ishtiaq, a social activist, stated: "We learned about solid waste management at home. I learnt how to separate my kitchen garbage, which was incredibly helpful to me.
A resident of Sialkot named Rabia Ahad claimed that whereas kids used to play in an extremely crowded setting at home, they are now much more comfortable.
