LISBON: On Saturday, thousands of people protested in Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, demanding better wages and other measures to combat the growing cost of living.
The country's largest labour union confederation, the CGTP, called the march, which took place the day after a nationwide government employees strike in favour of increased pay.
Schools, hospitals, and garbage collection were all impacted by such move.
The CGTP wants the government to put in place a set of anti-poverty policies, including price restrictions on necessities and steps to rein in skyrocketing rents and mortgage interest rates.
The rate of inflation over 2022 was 7.4%, the highest in 30 years.
Isabel Camarinha, the general secretary of the CGTP, told the gathering that all workers should receive raises of at least 10 percent, above the rate of inflation, and at a minimum of 100 euros ($108).
