Andre Onana departs Qatar for the World Cup in 2022 after being suspended by Cameroon

Before being benched against Serbia, Andre Onana has started each of Cameroon's games this season.

Andre Onana, the goalie for Cameroon, has been suspended by the national football organisation and has left the team and is not expected to return to the World Cup.

According to a source close to the player, Onana checked out of the team hotel on Tuesday and made his way to the airport, where his first stop was Paris before continuing on to Yaounde, the capital of Cameroon.

In a statement shared on Twitter, Onana said, "I have put all my efforts and energy into finding solutions to a situation that a footballer often experiences, but there has been no will on the other side.

"However, I always appreciate and concur with the choices made by those responsible for advancing the success of our team and nation."

After Indomitable Lions coach Rigobert Song said that established first-choice Onana had requested not to participate in their second Group G encounter, despite allegations of the two having a falling out in Qatar, Cameroon's football association (Fecafoot) took action.

The 26-year-old Inter Milan goalkeeper, who was not named among the replacements, was changed to Devis Epassy for Monday's 3-3 tie with Serbia.

He "was not allowed to be on the ground to help Cameroon achieve the team's goals," according to Onana's statement.

I always conducted myself in a way that would help the team succeed, he continued.

Onana had been "temporarily suspended from the group for disciplinary grounds," according to a communiqué Onana had received from Fecafoot on Monday evening.

Before being benched against Serbia, Onana had started every game for the Central Africans this year and had accrued 34 international caps.

Song's former teammate Samuel Eto'o is now in charge of Fecafoot, which has offered the 46-year-old coach "its entire support" as he implements measures "aimed at maintaining discipline, unity, complementarity, and coherence with the national squad."

There are rumours that the goalie and coach had a disagreement about Onana frequently leaving his penalty area.
