As increasingly intense Russian attacks target Kyiv, at least one person is killed and two are injured in a rare attack on Moscow.
In what one lawmaker described as the deadliest attack on the city since World War Two, drones targeted Moscow on Tuesday but were neutralised, according to Russia. Kyiv was also attacked by air for the third time in 24 hours.
The war has mostly been fought within Ukraine since Russia launched soldiers into its neighbour in February of last year, while Moscow has recorded several incidents on its territory and attributed them to Ukraine, including an alleged assassination attempt against President Vladimir Putin.
Two individuals were hurt, although not significantly, according to Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin, while some inhabitants of two lightly damaged apartment buildings were momentarily evacuated.
While Baza, a Telegram group with connections to the security services, claimed that more than 25 drones were involved, the Russian defence ministry said that eight drones deployed by Kiev were shot down or redirected.
Southwest Moscow residents reported hearing loud explosions at approximately 5 to 6 in the morning local time (02:00 to 03:00 GMT), followed by the scent of fuel. A drone being shot down and a smoke plume billowing above the Moscow skyline were both seen on camera.
Maxim Ivanov, a lawmaker, referred to it as the most severe attack on Moscow since the Nazis, and he claimed that no person could now evade "the new reality."
"You will either defeat the enemy as a single fist with our Motherland, or the indelible shame of cowardice, collaboration, and betrayal will engulf your family," he stated.
In an incident that Russia blamed on both Kiev and said was directed at Putin two weeks ago, two drones detonated above the Kremlin.
Mykhailo Podolyak, a presidential assistant for Ukraine, refuted claims that Kiev was directly engaged in Tuesday's attacks on Moscow, but he said, "We are pleased to watch," and hinted that there might be more to come.
The strike was described as a "terrorist drone attack" carried out by the "Kyiv regime" by the Russian defence ministry.
