Apple has lost an ongoing patent lawsuit with VernetX A Texas court has ordered Apple to pay the company 50 crore 28 lakh in royalties.
Apple and VernetX have been suing for 10 years over VPN technology,according to a report by technology site Verge.The iPhone maker was using VernetX's technology in the VPN on Demand and FaceTime features to sue Apple.
In a statement,apple said it was planning to appeal the decision,saying"the lawsuit has been going on for over a decade,the patent has nothing to do with the product's original validity and the patent office has not validated it."Such lawsuits only hinder innovation and harm the customer. "
Apple has filed a lawsuit seeking a reconsideration of VernetX's patent invalidation decision.Earlier this year,the US Court of appeals rejected Apple's application
In 2016, a federal court in Texas ordered Apple to pay VernetX a 50crore 28 lakh fine for violating four patents in a lengthy lawsuit.The court ruled that the patents had been infringed on FaceTime and iMessage.
Subsequently,in november 2019,a three-judge panel canceled the fine amounting to US 50crore 28lakh. However,the panel did not rule out the possibility that older iPhone models had violated two VernetX patents.
