IF THIS HAD NOT HAPPENED …

One of my neighbors once lost all his farm products and livestock to a fire.

In order to console him and offer solace, my grandmother told him and all of us a story. It’s about a preacher and who had a sinply phrase for everything that happened to or around him.

This preacher was a very simple and humble man. He had no issues. Good days or bad days, he always had a charming smile.

If anything ever happened to or around him, he would simply look at the situation and say ‘If this had not happened, maybe something worse would have happened.’

Simple.

Some people hated him for this. They always expected him to say more than that. The phrase was too simple and straightforward.

One bad day, his son had an accident and broke his leg. Some good Samaritans found him and brought him  home. So many people gathered and sympathized with the family. When the pastor returned and heard what had happened, he simply said ‘If this had not happened, maybe something worse would have happened.’

Two days later, all the young men in the village returned to the mines where they worked to earn their daily bread. The pastor son couldn’t go to work because of his injuries. The mines collapsed and no one survived.

When the pastor heard about the incident, he simply smiled and said, ‘If this had not happened, maybe something worse could have happened.’

Indeed, something worse could have happened.
