Latkan is a kind of native and unconventional fruit, which is very rich in nutrients and medicinal properties. The English name is Burmese grape and the scientific name is Baccaurea sapida. It is a medium sized evergreen tree. The fruit is round capsule, its fruit turns yellow when ripe. Peel a squash, grate it and squeeze the juice. It is widely used as a fruit. At present it is being cultivated in certain places of Bangladesh such as Narsingdi, Sylhet, Gazipur, Netrokona and Mymensingh districts. Among them, Sadar, Shibpur, Raipura and Belab upazilas of Narsingdi district are cultivating the most Latkan. Narsingdi's Latkan tastes very good and is in great demand across the country.

The nutritional value of Latkan
Latkan is a very nutritious and delicious fruit. For every 100 grams of mature Latkan, there are 1.42 grams of meat, 0.45 grams of fat, 0.9 grams of total minerals, 0.3 grams of iron and 91 kilocalories of food energy. (Iron that increases the amount of hemoglobin in the body's blood) Lotcon also contains 0.03 mg of vitamin B1 and 0.19 mg of vitamin B2. Lotcon is usually called a fruit rich in vitamin B2. Vitamin B2 is a very important vitamin, which is a very essential element for the body. As a result, people of all ages can eat safely as they have very little fat and no sugar.

Medicinal properties of Latkan
Latkan has medicinal properties as well as nutritional value. Eating this fruit relieves nausea and quenches thirst. Dry and powdered lotcon leaves are also used to reduce diarrhea and stress. Latkan acid is a sweet fruit so eating this fruit enhances the taste in our mouth and increases the taste of food. It also contains enough iron to eliminate anemia in the body.

Improved varieties of Latkan, soil and planting season
Good and improved varieties of seedlings or cuttings should be planted. Bari Latkan-1 is the best variety Latkan and this variety is cultivable all over the country. There is also Bau Latkan-1. It is better to collect Latkan saplings and plant them in the month of Baishakh-Jyastha, but at the end of the monsoon, i.e. in the month of Bhadra-Ashwin, the saplings can also be planted. Latkan grows well in damp and partially shaded environments even under large trees like mango or jackfruit but cannot tolerate waterlogging. If water accumulates for 8-10 days, the tree may die. This is why sandy-loam soils are more suitable for Latkan cultivation in areas where water does not stand but rainfall is high.

Garden management

  • First of all, a few men and most women should collect and plant pens in the garden of Latkan. It will have the benefit of pollination and can be more profitable. Female and male trees can be identified only after the flowers of Latkan come. At that time 20% of the male trees should be left in the garden and the remaining male trees should be cut down. New saplings will have to be planted there again. However, to overcome this problem, Latkan's wife should plant a pen in the garden first.
