Pulses are second only to rice in the daily diet of every family in Bangladesh. Pulses are a protein rich food. The amount of protein is 20 to 25 percent. In addition to protein, there is excess lysine, adequate amounts of sugars, fats and minerals. As pulses, we mainly understand gram, pea, arahar, masakalai, lentil seeds. Almost all types of pulses are cultivated in this country. Mugdal is one of them. As delicious as it is to eat, it is also possible to get good prices by cultivating it. Mugdal is cultivated in different parts of the country. Of these, Patuakhali, Barguna and Barisal districts are the most cultivated.

Born
Multiple high yielding varieties of mug have been developed by Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute. Among them are Bari Mug-2 (Kanti), Bari Mug-3 (Pragati), Bari Mug-4 (Rupsha), Bari

Mug-5 (Taiwanese), Bari Mug-6. Apart from this, Binamug-5, Binamug-6 and Binamug-6 are among the high yielding varieties invented by the Atomic Agriculture Research Institute in Bangladesh.
Brief description of the varieties

Bari Mug-2 (Kanti): The height of the tree is 40-45 cm. The color of the seeds is green. The skin of the seed is smooth. Thousand seeds weigh 30-40 grams. This variety can be cultivated in Kharif-1, Kharif-2 and late Rabi seasons as it is day neutral. The amount of meat is 20-24%. Lifespan 70-75 days. Yield 0.9-1.1 tons per hectare. The variety is tolerant to sarcospora spots and yellow mosaic diseases.
Bari Mug-3 (Progress): As the day is neutral, planting can be delayed in Kharif-1, Kharif-2 and Rabi seasons. The amount of meat is 19-21%. Lifespan 70-75 days. Yield 1.0-1.1 tons per hectare. The variety is tolerant to Sarcospora spots and yellow mosaic virus.

Bari Mug-4 (Rupsha): This variety can be sown late in Kharif-1, Kharif-2 and Rabi seasons as the day is neutral. The variety is especially suitable for the southern part of the country.

Bari Mug-5 (Taiwanese): Larger in size of leaves, fruits and seeds. The color of the seeds is dark green. Thousand seeds weigh 40-42 grams. The special feature of the variety is that the fruits ripen together.

Bari Mug-6: The height of the tree is 40-45 cm. At the same time almost all the pods mature. The color of the leaves and seeds is dark green. The grain size is large. Weight per 100 seeds is 5.1-5.2 grams. Wheat can be sown till 1st week of April after harvest. Besides, it can be sown at the end of Kharif-2 and Rabi seasons. Yellow mosaic virus and leaf spot disease tolerant. Lifespan is 55-56 days. Yield per hectare is about 1.5 tons.

Binamug-5: All fruits ripen almost simultaneously. This variety ripens 8-10 days before Kanti. The seed size is larger than Kanti and the color is bright green. Yield per hectare is about 1.4 tons. The leaves are resistant to yellow mosaic virus and are resistant to Sarcospora disease.

Binamug-6: All fruits ripen almost at the same time. Lifespan is 74-7 days. Authorized varieties ripen 10-12 days before Kanti. The seed size is larger than Kanti and the color is bright green. Yield per hectare is about 1.4 tons. The leaves are resistant to yellow mosaic virus and are resistant to Sarcospora disease.

Binamug-6: The height of the tree is medium (35-40 cm). Life span is short, 74-7 days from sowing to maturity. Seed size is medium and bright. The average weight of 100 seeds is 4.0 grams. It is suitable for cultivation in summer, it can be cultivated in winter as it is neutral during the day. The average yield per hectare is 1.8 tons. With proper care, maximum yield of 2.2 tons per hectare is possible.
Production technology

Soil: Sandy loam and loamy loam soils are best for mug cultivation. The land should be medium high. Waterlogging is extremely harmful for mugs. Therefore, land with good drainage system should be selected.

Land preparation: After ‘Joe’ comes in the land, 3-4 cultivations should be done well and the soil should be shaken with a ladder. This increases the germination rate of seeds. Besides, all the weeds of the land should be cleared.

Sowing time: The sowing time of mug varies from area to area. Kharif-1 season from the beginning to the end of the month of Falgun (from the end of February to mid-March). Shravan-Bhadra month in Kharif-2 season (first of August to last part of September). The best time for sowing in Barisal region during Rabi season is Poush-Magh month (mid-February to last week of January).

Caution: In the month of Ashar (mid-June to mid-July) the fruits of mug rot due to incessant rains. If the sowing of seeds is completed within the first week of Chaitra (mid-March), the crop can be collected before the month of Ashar and the risk of fruit rot can be avoided. On the other hand, if seeds are sown before the approved time, there is a risk of death of seedlings due to winter.
Seed rate: Mug seed rate varies from variety to variety. 25-30 kg per hectare for Bari Mug-2, Bari Mug-3 and Bari Mug-4. Bari Mug-5 requires 40-45 kg of seeds. In case of scattered sowing, the amount of seeds should be slightly higher.

Sowing method: Seeds can be sown in scattered and row. However, it is better to weave in rows. In this case the distance from row to row is 25-30 cm. And the distance from tree to tree is 10-15 cm. If it is good. Seed depth 3-4 cm. If germination is high.
Amount of fertilizer: Fertilizer should be applied per hectare in the land.

Fertilizer application method: All fertilizers should be applied during the last cultivation. Specific microbial fertilizers can be applied for cultivation in unconventional areas. However, it is better to apply 60 g of microbial fertilizer per kg of seed. If microbial fertilizer is used, urea fertilizer does not have to be applied.

Interim Care: In order to get good yield of Mugdal, weeds in the field need to be cleaned regularly. Although weed control is difficult with spraying method, the work has to be done in time. Weeds need to be controlled once in 25-30 days of sowing to get good yield. Excessive rainfall so as not to cause waterlogging
