It was 44 years ago that Argentina last won a World Cup outright against the Netherlands. It was a glorious victory—the 1978 World Cup final. Argentina won the World Cup for the first time with a 3–1 win thanks to a brace from Mario Kempes. The other goal was by Daniel Bartoni. The Netherlands have won two straight World Cups against Argentina—one in 1978, 4–0, with goals from Ari Hahn, Johan Neeskens, Rob Rensenbrink and Pleun Streak. The other was in the quarter-finals of the 1998 World Cup—with goals by Patrick Kluivert and Dennis Bergkamp.

Argentina have faced the Netherlands three times outside of the World Cup. A 1979 FIFA Celebration match, which ended in a goalless draw. In 1999, the FIFA friendly match was drawn 1-1. In another friendly in 2003, the Netherlands won 1–0.
