Erik ten Hag has admitted that he joined Manchester United specifically for the purpose of leading the Red Devils in front of a boisterous Old Trafford crowd.
The club is currently ranked fourth in the Premier League after 20 games thanks to the Dutch manager, who took over at United during the summer.
Ten Hag's best performance to date came on Saturday at Old Trafford when his team overcame a goal down to defeat cross-town rival Manchester City, prevailing 2-1 on goals from Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford.
Ten Hag praised the atmosphere at Old Trafford during that victory and acknowledged that it was the main reason he wanted to lead the team in a post-match interview with the club's official website.
Getting the connection between the players and the fans back was, in Ten Hag's opinion, one of the season's preseason objectives. "If we are eager to bring back this illustrious club we must have unity. I believe that today served as an illustration of how important it is to fight alongside one another in a supportive environment. When we do this, it makes it very challenging for any adversary to manipulate us.
"On a serious note we must do it at Manchester United here specifically to get that experience [of playing in front of United supporters and at Old Trafford].
It was one of my justifications for coming here to Man Utd before I arrived.
Despite the club's commanding league position, Ten Hag was quick to dismiss the idea that United would be involved in the title chase, telling reporters after the match " Therefore is so stupid and unacceptable to speak about titles in January, so don't do that. Not even halfway there yet. There will be a lot more. We need to fill in a number of other game-related deficiencies as well.
