Nathan Jones had signed a contract to become Southampton's new manager.
Jones became Southampton's first choice after Ralf Hasenhuttle was sacked on Sunday and the club quickly agreed a deal with Luton Town.
Now, after completing Luton's final game on Tuesday, Jones has signed a long-term deal with St Mary's. The 49-year-old will be joined on the South Coast by Chris Cohen and Alan Sheehan, who will complete their starts at Kenilworth Road. Jones took part in St. Carabao Cup against Sheffield Wednesday and will be confirmed with his new position on Thursday.
Jones' first job will be overseeing a Premier League game against Liverpool at the weekend, but he will take longer to get used to the new environment. There will be a six-week break before the World Cup, so the former Stoke manager will be able to pass on his ideas to the players who will not be going to Qatar.
His arrival at Southampton follows two impressive spells at Luton. Jones led the club to a number of promotions before leaving for Stoke, but returned to the club after an unsuccessful spell with Porter.
Luton reached the semi-finals in the Championship play-offs last year and are in touch again this season.
