First of all, I want to point out that there are no computer special effects. No modern graphics. Natural footage and hand-drawn pictures were used to create the best cartoon in history. The procedure itself is rather curious. I offer several features of filming the cartoon "Hedgehog in the Fog". Let me remind you that this is 1975!
Fog
A special glass wall was created using a special background to create haze. Tracing paper was attached to it. Films with characters were placed behind this surface. They were either brought closer or removed, depending on the need.
Moths
These characters appeared due to the use of a different scheme. They exposed a soft light that was directed directly at the moths. This allowed us to create a glowing effect. As soon as the light was removed to the side, the characters disappeared.
Hedgehog
The main character is a character created from separate elements. Painted with watercolors on film and figured out needles, eyes, a knot and paws. This technique was used in order to be able to control each element separately by moving them under the table.
Falling leaves
They are real and real. They were attached to a thin wire by the stem. When taking shots, they were moved from side to side. A lot of shots were taken. Time-lapse shots were needed to add volume.
Owl
Reflection of a bird, with lowering its paws into the water, turned out to be not as simple as it seems at first glance. For this, a real basin filled with water was used. First, it was necessary to shoot every movement and movement of the owl in the reflection. That is when it is reflected on the surface of the water. Then the moment was filmed, with the lowering of the foot into the water.
In fact, in the end, each character turned out, as it were, separately, but connected by a single semantic thread. Hayao Miyazaki, renowned cartoonist, considers it the best cartoon in the history of animation. It was able to reproduce all the features of the human perception of the world. This fully applies to the unconscious. The one that psychiatrist Carl Gustav Jung often talks about. Ultimately, the director Yuri Norshteyen was able to create a real masterpiece using various techniques of filming and reproducing reality in unreality.
