Oddly enough, but the toponym "Odessa" still began to appear in the sources. But, as always, in hindsight.

Let us pay attention to the work "The first thirty years of the history of the city of Odessa". On the one hand, here we see all those dates that we are used to celebrating. But, it is impossible to discount some confusion.
At the beginning of the work, we see the date: 1793. The author wrote several pages of his text and suddenly, he forgot what he wrote at the very beginning. We already see 1794. Read on. Again we see another interpretation. The author writes more simply: 1793 (1794). Isn't it strange?
By the way, pay attention to the fact that this work was written by an official of the highest level and rank. Some call him "the father of the history of the Novorossiysk Territory." There is another interesting fact. Historians of that time did not even want to read this work. Some experts wrote several devastating articles and then forgot about this work.
August 22 (September 2), 1794
Memorable child? Do you recognize? Yes, this is the same child from which the history of Odessa is being traced. That is, the same birthday. To be frank, this date cannot be found in the writings of historians of that time. No one says exactly for August 22, according to the old style. Yes, and for September 2 in a new way, they don’t say the same.
Essay on the centenary of Odessa
This is an interesting document. It states that Empress Catherine issued a decree dated May 27, 1794. In it, she says that from this day on, Hajibey will be considered a city. Stop. And before that, Hajibey was a village? Judging by other written sources, Hajibey was a city. Anyway, for quite some time now.
Now we read the note. It states that on August 22, 1794, on the day of the coronation of Nicholas I, Metropolitan Gabriel arrived in the city. He consecrated the foundation of the cathedral of the Greek and Catherine's churches.
Now pay attention to one more aspect. "The coronation of Nicholas I in 1794". Why, that Nicholas I himself was born two years later, that is, in 1796? Apparently, they just forgot about it.
Alexey Markevich
Now we turn our attention to the work of Markevich. He began to raise the topic of the Lithuanian Khadzhibey (Kochubiev). Sorry dear ones. This is already more than 400 years of difference! Aleksey refers to Jan Dlugosh. These same testimonies date back to May 1415. It was then that the first mention of the royal port appeared. Let me remind you that these are the times of the reign of the Lithuanian prince Vitovt.
Nowadays, the historical community is divided into two parts. Some believe that Odessa is still a little over 200 tons. But there are adherents of Markevich's theory. In his opinion, Odessa is more than 600 years old.
