Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn commonly known as Rembrandt was a Dutch painter, draughtsman and printmaker Born on the 15th of July 1606 in Leiden, Netherland.
In this painting made in 1633, Rembrandt portrays a famous story in the Holy Bible about a storm that occurred in the Sea of Galilee. A sleeping Jesus Christ and his 12 disciples where once crossing the Sea one evening when a very strong storm nearly marsh their boat. The anxious disciples woke Jesus up.
The Bible reads in Mark chapter 4 verse 39-41 :
“He woke up and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” Then the wind ceased, and there was a dead calm. He said to them, “Why are you afraid? Have you still no faith?” And they were filled with great awe and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”
Rembrandt depicts scared disciples one of them pukes overboard while Jesus sits without agitation. The man dressed in blue is a portrait of Rembrandt who includes himself as a disciple and looks at us the viewers.
