TOPIC: THE GATES OF HELL

📖 TODAY'S TEXT:
Revelation 20: 10-15

🔑 KEY VERSE:
"For a fire is kindled in mine anger, and shall burn unto the lowest hell, and shall be consumed the earth with her increased, and set on fire the foundations of the mountains" (Deuteronomy 32:22).

🖊️ COMMENTARY
This world is full of miniature versions of eternal things. For instance, for more than 45 years a hellish fire has been burning in Turkmenistan desert. The place is called the "the door of hell" located 150 miles from the nation's capital. This site attracts thousands of tourist year by year. According to Opera News, at this moment the fire in this pit so far killed thousands of spiders which were turned into the pit by its glowing flames.

The story behind the fire is that in 1971 when The Republic was still part
of the Soviet Union some Soviet geologist came to the area prospecting for oil. On reaching the site they found what seemed to be substantial oil field and immediately began drilling not knowing that they were driling on top of a cavernous pocket of natural gas which could not support the weight of their heavy equipment.

The site subsequently collapsed and both equipment and they fell into the "bottomless pit" which also caused other places in the desert to collapse. The gas contained methane which is not really harmful but it displaced Oxygen, making breathing difficult for the drilling crew. The effect began to kill animals living in the Karakum desert. The scientists then decided to light the
gas so as to burn away the dangerous gas in few weeks. But what they hoped to burn off in few weeks has been burning till date.

This looks like a comical portrayal of the real hell spoken about in Revelation 20. Psalms 9:17 says, "The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God." The only thing hell has to offer is sorrows, Psalms 18:5 says, "the sorrow of hell compassed me about: the snares of death prevented me." It is the final eternal abode of the wicked. While people are going sight-seeing and fun-seeking in the man- made hell of karakum desert, the hell God prepared for the wicked will be a place of horrible eternal pain.
