TOPIC: BASIC GUIDELINES FOR CHRISTIAN LIVING

📖 TODAY'S TEXT:
John 15:1-5; II Peter 3:18

🔑 KEY VERSE:
"As newborn babies, desire the pure milk of the word that you may grow thereby" (1 Peter 2:2, NKJV).

🖊️ COMMENTARY
Guideline means rules or instructions that are given. They tell us how to do something. Guidelines can be used to help us make right decisions. The Bible teaches that the Christian life is one of constant growth. After we are born again, we become adopted members of God's family. And it is God's purpose that we grow into full stature and become mature in Christ. It would be against the law of God and nature if we were to remain babies and thus become spiritual dwarfs after we are saved (cf. Heb. 5:12-14). Peter says we are to grow in grace (| Pet. 3:18). This implies steady development,
constant enlargement, increasing wisdom. Therefore, for a Believer to grow properly certain guidelines must be observed for good-spiritual health.

The following Guidelines are excerpts from Billy Graham's book, Peace with God:
✓ *Read your Bible daily.* Do not be content to skim through a chapter merely to satisfy your conscience. Hide the Word of God in your heart (Psa. 119:9-11). God's Word comforts, guides, corrects, encourages- all we need is there (2 Tim. 3:16, 17).
✓ *Learn the secret of prayer.* Prayer is communicating with God. Every prayer that you pray will be answered. Sometimes that answer may be "Yes" and sometimes "No," and sometimes it is "Wait"
✓ *Rely constantly on the Holy Spirit.* We know that the Holy Spirit prays for us (Romans 8), and what a comfort that should be to the weakest of us. The Holy Spirit is our guide, helper and teacher(John 14:16-17).
✓ *Be a witnessing Christian.* Witnessing means telling others about salvation in Christ (Matt. 28:18-20). A believer's witness is in two ways: by life and by word-and the two, where possible, should go hand in hand.

✓ *Let love be the ruling principle of your life.* Jesus said to His followers, "By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another (John 13:35). Loving one another is the greatest demonstration of the fact that we are Christians.
✓ *Be an obedient Christian.* Let Christ have first place in all the choices of your life.
*Learn how to meet temptation.* Temptation is not sin but yielding to temptation that is sin. Let Christ through the Holy Spirit do the fighting for you. We overcome temptations through the Word (Luke. 4:4).

✓ *Live above your circumstances.* Do not let your circumstances get you down. Learn to live graciously within them, realizing the Lord Himself is with you.
