TOPIC: CURE TO SELFISHNESS IN MARRIAGE

📖 TODAY'S TEXT:

Ephesians 5:21-25, 29; Philippians 2:5

🔑 KEY VERSE:

"[Christ] "Made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men" (Phil. 2:7, NKJV).

🖊️ COMMENTARY

Selflessness is a major key to overcoming selfishness. Selflessness is the opposite of selfishness. Selflessness is defined as lack of preoccupation with one's own interest or desires. Christ rendered selfless service to mankind (Phil. 2:5).

Marriage means sacrificing, sharing, and reducing personal liberties. For any marriage to be productive, a spouse must decide to deny self of what he/she wants in order to help his/her partner to achieve his/her goal. In marriage, two becomes one flesh (Gen. 2:24). In Ephesians 5:25-32, Paul urged husbands to lay down their lives for their wives by serving and loving them unconditionally in the same way that Jesus laid down his life for the Church, His Body. Jesus died so that we could experience new life (cf. vv. 25, 28). The principles that applied to Jesus' death and resurrection apply to our marriage too. Christ laid down His life for us while we were still sinners (Rom. 5:6).

The following five points are essential for the healing of selfishness in

our marriages:

👉🏿Be honest with your husband/wife.

👉🏿 Good communication. Communication is key to success in marriage.

👉🏿 Marriage partners must be flexible. Rigidity destroys any relationship.

👉🏿 Be willing to sacrifice. Sacrificial living promotes healthy marriage.

👉🏿 Learn to forgive each other. Forgiveness restores a broken

relationship.

You can overcome selfishness in your marriage. Let the mind of Christ be in you (Phil. 2:5).
