*TOPIC: CONSEQUENCES OF DISOBEDIENCE (1)*

📖 *TODAY'S TEXT:*
Jonah 1:1-7

🔑 *KEY VERSE:*
"If I ascend into heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there" (Psalm 139:8, NKJV).

🖊️ *COMMENTARY*
One key consequence of disobedience is separation from God. Basically, there are two reasons people run away from God! First, they are frightened and fearful of losses. They think God will control them, or cost them too much. Second, they are afraid of God doing too much good. They are fine with God blessing their own life, but are not about God blessing others that they don't think deserve it as much as they do. Sometimes both reasons are at work. When the Bible records that "Jonah rose up to flee," he thought he could flee the presence of God. Jonah could not run away from His presence, but He was separated from fellowship with God. Disobedience results in broken fellowship with God.

Jonah is a good example of the Christian who is trying to run away from God in disobedience because he perceives the answer God wants to bring to sinful people is not one that he likes. But this kind of wayward running usually ends in a dead end. Consequences of Jonah's disobedience include bitterness, unfavourable climate, loss of earthly goods and a ride in the belly of a fish. It is hard to run away from a God who is everywhere. Even when you're running away from Him you are Sure to run into Him. Could it be because of disobedience that God seems to be far away from you? Obedience is the secret to intimate fellowship with God. Jonah when confronted by the mariners confessed he was running away from God. Can you make a confession today, ask God for forgiveness and go and do what He commanded you to do?
