KEEP AWAY FROM WORTHLESS FRIENDS

TEXT:

2 Samuel 13:1-15

KEY VERSE:

"A man who has friends must himself be friendly; but there is a friend that sticks closer than a brother" (Proverbs 18:24).

MESSAGE:

Our friends, to a large extent, determine our future. Great friends somehow guarantee a great future and vice versa. That is why we are encouraged by God's word to choose our friends wisely. Tope and Bayo were friends. On a holiday, they went walking into a forest enjoying the beauty of nature. Suddenly, they saw a bear coming. They became frightened. Bayo who knew all about climbing trees ran up to a tree and climbed quickly. He didn't think of Tope. Tope had no idea how to climb a tree. Tope thought for a second. He had heard that animals do not prefer dead bodies, so he fell to the ground and held his breath. The bear sniffed him and thought he was dead. So it went its way. Bayo asked Tope, "What did the bear whisper into your ears?" Tope replied, "the bear asked me to keep away from friends like you...."

The divine injunction for us today is to review our circle of friends Friends like Jonadab are not worth keeping. Anyone that gives you any advice that contradicts morals and the teachings in God's word is not worth being called your friend. We are to keep away from such people. And so let us garner the boldness to walk away from those who constantly reduce us, endanger our lives and think only of themselves. Let us strengthen our bonds with those who are committed to bringing out the best in us. But most importantly, we can learn to attract the best of friends by becoming one.

CONTROLLING THOUGHT: 

A friend in need is a friend indeed.

PRAYER: 

Lord, help me to always prove myself a worthy friend.
