TOPIC: BIBLICAL PRINCIPLE OF HONOUR

📖 TODAY'S TEXT:
Ephesians 6:1-9

"Honour.. is the first commandment with promise..(Eph 6:2).

🖊️ COMMENTARY
All over the world, we are yearly reminded by the calendar to celebrate our parents. On the special days, millions of people use the season to honour, appreciate and demonstrate their love to their parents with special cards, gifts, family dinner, etc. All these are laudable. However, such gestures should not be restricted to yearly events but should take place on a regular basis. In addition, honour should not only be reserved for fathers and mothers; it should be given to everyone to whom it is due (Romans 13:7).

Honour is synonymous with reverence, esteem, value, homage and exaltation. Thus, giving honour to people implies treating them respectfully because we value them. It is something we do with an attitude of meekness, which is borne out of a proper perspective of who God is, who we are, and who others are in relation to us and God. Hence, the Bible instructs us to "esteem others better than" ourselves (Phil 2:3).

As contained in today's text, the biblical principle of honour has both generational and covenant implications. Its fruits are inestimable blessings when properly observed, but terrible consequences when despised. It is a principle that affects all. Whatever point we are in life today is a function of how we have applied this principle at home, in the church, the workplace, on ourselves and everywhere else. May we ensure that our relationship with one another is characterized by honour, integrity, loyalty, justice, and fair play!
