TOPIC: THE DESTRUCTION CALLED ENVY (1)

📖 TODAY'S TEXT:
Mark 7:20-23

🔑 KEY VERSE:
"For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work." (James 3:16)

🖊️ COMMENTARY
Envy is synonymous with covetousness, which is taken from the root word, "covet" - desire. This harmless desire takes on a negative connotation and becomes envy when what we desire is something owned by other people. Microsoft Encatra (2009) defines envy as ... the resentful or unhappy feeling of wanting someone's else success, good fortune, qualities, or possessions. Basically, envy is rooted in self: me, myself, I and mine. It is a selfish desire that makes us to be grieved because somebody with whom we had matched ourselves in thought or with whom others matched us with, surpassed us or was considered to have surpassed us. At the slighted opportunity, we will pick up unnecessary quarrel with such person and when we see any trace of failure around him, we gloat and get elated secretly.

Envy is self seeking. It banishes love, sabotages corporate efforts and kills any idea or purpose that is not centred on it, no matter how good. The irony is that the envious person is not free, for the strength that goes with envy drains away his physical and spiritual health. Godliness with contentment is great gain (1 Tim 6:8), for a man's worth is not tied in the abundance of what he he have. Be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, "I will never leave you nor forsake you" (Heb 13:5-6, NKJV).
