Marriage is the first and most important institution established by the Creator on this planet earth, and more of a covenant than a contract.
Marriage is actually the building block of society and therefore strong marriages make strong families, and strong families make strong communities and nations.
Marriage as an institution has evolved over the years.
In these modern times, people view marriage as a contract and not a covenant, and that has increased the rate of divorce and separations throughput the world. This untoward occurrence is prevalent in the Western world.
In addition to this, young people throughout the world are finding it hard to get married because of certain factors, and this trend is rising fast on the African continent.
I would like us to look at the real reasons why people are not yet married.
• High Expectations
Young people today have a long list of what they expect from a potential marriage partner, and most of these expectations are not realistic. Some of these expectations revolve around financial status, education, looks, character, location, etc.
The truth is that there is no human being on earth that is perfect or that will meet all of a particular person's expectations. Therefore, I would recommend that if a potential marriage partner meets even 20 percent of your expectations, go ahead and marry that person.
• Not Enough Money
Most people I have spoken to, including some friends, want to "Make it." or become rich before they get married.
This is quite absurd.
The truth is that marriages that are established on the basis of wealth usually do not stand the test of time.
I observed that poor or middle class couples in Africa have a happier, longer lasting marriage than their rich counterparts.
So I will recommend young people not to wait until they become millionaires before getting married; rather if you can provide necessities such as food, clothing and shelter for yourself and your potential marriage partner, then go ahead and marry.
• Physical Beauty
Most young people remain unmarried because they want to marry a beauty queen or a handsome prince charming.
But the truth remains that being pretty or handsome does not make one a good potential marriage partner, neither will it make a marriage to last.
What actually makes a marriage to last are character, compatibility, knowledge, wisdom and understanding.
I observed that the ugly or average looking girls usually get married before their pretty counterparts, especially in Africa. The reason for this is that they have better character than the pretty women who are not yet married.
My advice to young people is to consider someone's character more than the person's physical beauty, because beauty will take one into a palace, but only character can keep one there permanently.
• Level of Education
Most young people are not yet married because they want to get married to someone with the same or higher level of education as themselves.
I think this is not wise at all.
Education is good, but it will not make your marriage work or stand the test of time.
My advice to young people is that if you can understand a potential marriage partner and the person can understand you, then level of education can never be a hindrance to a happy, long-lasting marriage.
• Looking In The Wrong Place
Most young people today search for potential marriage partners over the internet.
I think this is the wrong way to go about it.
In case you don't know, the internet is a jungle filled with all sorts of dangers.
The truth is that over 90 percent of the people you would meet online whether on dating websites, social media or classified ad websites are not potential marriage partners for you.
The reason is that their agendas are different from yours.
They may be looking for hookups, looking to scam you, looking to steal your personal information, looking to stalk you or harm you or just looking for networking or job opportunities.
So I believe that the old-fashioned way of looking for a potential marriage partner is still the best; which is go offline, look around you, get to meet new people, befriend them and see where it goes.
