On Saturday, the 15th day of activity at the U20 World Cup, two quarter-final matches were played with wins for Israel and Italy over Brazil and Colombia, respectively.
The winners advanced to the semi-finals, where two more places remain to be filled and will be decided this Sunday with a pair of matches at the Estadio Único Madre de Ciudades in Santiago del Estero.
Israel 3 - Brazil 2
The duels took place at the San Juan del Bicentenario. In the first round, Israelis and Brazilians played a great match which was decided in extra time 3-2 in favour of the European runners-up.
The Canarinha took the lead through Marcos Leonardo, but their opponents equalised through Anan Khalaili. In extra time Matheus Nascimento restored the lead for the Verdeamarelos, who failed to protect the deficit and were eliminated by goals from Hamza Shibli and Dor Turgeman.
Their next opponents will be Uruguay.
Italy 3 - Colombia 1
The Italians then beat Colombia 3-1 with goals from Cesare Casadei, Tommaso Baldanzi and Francesco Esposito. Johan Torres scored for the South Americans, who left the tournament with a great image and with several players at a high level. In the next round, the Europeans will face South Korea.
In the 16th matchday played on Sunday, South Korea eliminated Nigeria by 1-0 (the Africans had eliminated one of the favourites, the local Argentina) while Uruguay did the same with the USA.
South Korea 1 - Nigeria 0
South Korea beat Nigeria 1-0 in extra time after a goalless draw in the first 90 minutes to advance to the semi-finals of the U-20 World Cup, where they will face Italy.
The Asian side's goal came from defender Choi Seok-Hyun, five minutes into the first extra time, in a match played at the Ciudad de Madres stadium in Santiago del Estero.
Korea outplayed the African side to earn a deserved victory over Nigeria, who had beaten Argentina in the last 16 of the tournament.
Uruguay 2 - USA 0
La Celeste beat the North American team 2-0, with goals from Anderson Duarte (21m PT) and Joshua Wynder against his own goal (11m ST), in a match held at the Estadio Único Madre de Ciudades de Santiago del Estero.
Uruguay reached this stage after their 1-0 win over Gambia at the same venue. Meanwhile, the United States had beaten New Zealand 4-0 in the Round of 16, in a match played at the Malvinas Argentinas stadium in Mendoza.
