The Copa Libertadores began in February with the preliminary stages, from which four clubs made it through to the zones and were added to the remaining 28. One of those who competed in these stages was Huracán and they reached the third stage, where they were eliminated by Sporting Cristal of Peru and went through to the Sudamericana.
Brazil is the country with the most representatives with seven clubs: Flamengo, Palmeiras, Inter Porto Alegre, Fluminense, Corinthians, Athletico Paranaense and Atlético Mineiro. Argentina follows with the five mentioned above. Ecuador (Independiente del Valle - recent winners of the Recopa Sudamericana -, Aucas and Barcelona de Guayaquil), Paraguay (Olimpia, Libertad and Cerro Porteno), Colombia (Independiente de Medellin, Atletico Nacional and Deportivo Pereira) and Peru (Alianza Lima, Melgar and Sporting Cristal) have three each. Finally, there are two teams from Chile (Colo Colo and Ñublense), Bolivia (Bolívar and The Strongest), Uruguay (Nacional and Liverpool) and Venezuela (Metropolitanos and Monagas).
The format of play.
The group stage will start on 4 April and finish on 29 June. The teams will play each other in their respective groups over two rounds - six matches - and the two leaders will advance to the Round of 16. The third-placed teams, meanwhile, will advance to the same stage but in the Sudamericana. From then on, there will be two-legged ties until the finalists are determined for the title match (the only one) on 11 November at the Maracana stadium in Rio de Janeiro.

The teams with the most Copa Libertadores titles are Independiente, with seven, and Boca, with six. Behind them are Peñarol of Uruguay (5) and River and Estudiantes de La Plata (4). The last champions, Flamengo, have three stars, as do San Pablo, Palmeiras, Nacional of Uruguay, Gremio and Santos. By country, Argentina has 25 trophies, Brazil 21, Uruguay eight, and Paraguay and Colombia three each.
