Dibu Martinez is a handicap. There is no way to describe the goalkeeper of the Argentine National Team, perhaps the best in the world, surely one of the greatest in the history of the Albiceleste. Thanks to the Mar del Plata native, Lionel Scaloni's team defeated Ecuador on penalties and advanced to the semifinals of the Copa América 2024.
From the outset, the Albiceleste found themselves in practically unexplored terrain during the last few years: La Tri overpowered them during the first 15 minutes. Scaloni's team was constantly overrun, generally down the right flank, and suffered on three occasions.
Moi Caicedo was unable to score comfortably in the first, but the clearest chance came from Jeremy Sarmiento, who forced a tremendous save from Dibu with his left foot, reminiscent of his heroics in Lusail. Despite having more of the ball, the defending champions were not on the pitch, and Félix Sánchez Bas's pupils seemed more energetic, winning the divisions and looking for the opponent's goal with conviction.
However, as the minutes went by, Argentina began to settle down and evened the match thanks to the work of its midfielders, Alexis Mac Allister and Enzo Fernandez, the latter being very imprecise in his final touches. It was the Chelsea midfielder who had the first clear chances, with a header and a shot that was blocked by the defense.
And from that ball, which led to a corner, came the opening goal for the Albiceleste: Messi, unknown, not very active, perhaps bothered by the muscle injury he is carrying in his right adductor, sent a cross to the near post that Mac Allister combed and found Licha Martinez at the far post. The defender headed and, although Alexander Domínguez cleared the ball, it had (clearly) entered the Ecuadorian goal in one piece.
In this way, perhaps without having done so many merits, but taking advantage of the moment and showing their hierarchy, Argentina took the lead in Houston, in what was Martinez's first goal with the national team.
The world champions took the lead in a key part of the match and started the second half looking to finish off the game (Messi, from the right, had a key chance, but his shot was weak), but Ecuador resisted the (scarce) Albiceleste attacks and had an unbeatable chance to start the match, from a penalty for a handball by Rodrigo De Pau. However, while Dibu was looking for a big chance, Enner Valencia shot against the post and Argentina kept the lead.
The match, then, became disputed, frictional, with no room for team play. Ecuador pushed with more desire than clarity, throwing all its attackers on the field, and Argentina defended by adding centimeters and seeking to take possession of the ball, something that cost them throughout the night.
And in that context, when it seemed that they would take the hard-earned victory, came the 1-1. La Tri played a quick free kick, John Yeboah sent in a cross and Kevin Rodriguez, one of the Ecuadorian tanks, headed in the equalizer. After a lengthy VAR review, Uruguayan referee Andres Matonte, who had a very poor night, correctly awarded the goal.
And in the penalties, Dibu. Dibu, Dibu and always Dibu. Messi, in one of his weakest performances with the national team's jersey, took the ball and crashed his shot against the crossbar. But Martínez blocked Ángel Mena's shot and, after Julián Álvarez had scored, he took it out of Alan Minda's hands. Then Mac Allister, Yeboah, Gonzalo Montiel and Jordy Caicedo exchanged goals, in order, before Nicolás Otamendi, one of the great referents, defined the series and unleashed the Rio de la Plata madness.
As had already happened during the Copa América, Argentina did not play well. Unlike what happened in many stretches of the Scaloni era, they did not feel comfortable, and at times danced to the rhythm of La Tri, who were a worthy rival, with strength and frontal attacks that complicated the Albiceleste defense. But it is the best team in the world also because of its names, including the goalkeeper of Aston Villa.
La Scaloneta's opponent will be decided this Friday, from 10 p.m. (ARG), when Venezuela and Canada, Group B leader and Group B runner-up, respectively, meet in Arlington, Texas. And the semifinal will take place on Tuesday, July 9 in New Jersey (9 p.m. ARG time).
On the other side, looking for the semifinal, Colombia-Panama and Uruguay-Brazil will be the matches of a Saturday full of soccer.

El Dibu Martínez es un hándicap. No hay manera de describir al arquero de la Selección Argentina, quizás el mejor del mundo, seguro uno de los más grandes de la historia albiceleste. Por el marplatense, el equipo de Lionel Scaloni venció en los penales a Ecuador y avanzó a las semifinales de la Copa América 2024.
De entrada, la Albiceleste se encontró con un terreno prácticamente inexplorado durante los últimos años: la Tri la pasó por arriba durante los primeros 15 minutos. El conjunto de Scaloni era desbordado constantemente, en general por el carril derecho, y sufrió en tres ocasiones.
Moi Caicedo no pudo definir cómodo en la primera, pero la más clara la tuvo Jeremy Sarmiento, que forzó una tremenda atajada del Dibu con la pierna izquierda, rememorando su gesta de Lusail. A pesar de tener más la pelota, los defensores del título no se hallaban en la cancha, y los pupilos de Félix Sánchez Bas parecían más enérgicos, ganando las divididas y buscando con convicción el arco rival.
No obstante, con el correr de los minutos, Argentina se empezó a acomodar y emparejó el encuentro a partir del trabajo de sus mediocampistas, Alexis Mac Allister y Enzo Fernández, el último muy impreciso en los toques finales. Justamente el volante de Chelsea fue el que tuvo las primeras claras, con un cabezazo y un remate tapado por la defensa.
Y de esa pelota, que derivó en un córner, llegó la apertura del marcador para la Albiceleste: Messi, desconocido, poco activo, quizás molesto por la lesión muscular que arrastra en el aductor derecho, envió un centro al primer palo que peinó Mac Allister y encontró a Licha Martínez en el segundo palo. El zaguero cabeceó y, pese a que Alexander Domínguez despejó la pelota, esta había ingresado (claramente) entera al arco ecuatoriano.
De esta manera, quizás sin haber hecho tantos méritos, pero aprovechando el momento y haciendo gala de su jerarquía, Argentina se adelantaba en Houston, en lo que fue el primer gol de Martínez con el seleccionado.
Los campeones del mundo pegaron en un tramo clave del cotejo y arrancaron el segundo tiempo buscando rematar el partido (Messi, de derecha, tuvo una clave, mas su disparo fue débil), pero Ecuador resistió los (escasos) embates albicelestes y tuvo una chance inmejorable para arrancar, a partir de un penal por mano de Rodrigo De Pau. Sin embargo, mientras Dibu buscaba agigantarse, Enner Valencia pateó al palo y Argentina mantuvo la ventaja.
El partido, entonces, se tornó disputado, friccionado, sin lugar para el juego asociado. Ecuador empujó con más ganas que claridad, tirando todos sus atacantes a la cancha, y Argentina se defendió sumando centímetros y buscando adueñarse del balón, algo que le costó a lo largo de toda la noche.
Y en ese contexto, cuando parecía que se llevaba el trabajado triunfo, llegó el 1-1. La Tri jugó rápido un tiro libre, John Yeboah envió un centro y Kevin Rodríguez, uno de los tanques ecuatorianos, peinó de cabeza y anotó el empate. Luego de una larga revisión del VAR, el árbitro uruguayo Andrés Matonte, de muy floja noche, convalidó el gol correctamente.
Y en los penales, Dibu. Dibu, Dibu y siempre Dibu. Messi, en una de sus presentaciones más flojas con la camiseta del seleccionado, la picó y estrelló su remate en el travesaño. Pero Martínez tapó el remate de Ángel Mena y, después de que Julián Álvarez anotara, se lo sacó a Alan Minda. Después intercambiaron goles, en orden, Mac Allister, Yeboah, Gonzalo Montiel y Jordy Caicedo, para que Nicolás Otamendi, uno de los grandes referentes, definiera la serie y desatara la locura rioplatense.
Como ya le había pasado durante la Copa América, Argentina no jugó bien. A diferencia de lo ocurrido en muchos tramos de la era Scaloni, no se sintió cómodo, y de a largos ratos bailó al ritmo de la Tri, que fue un dignísimo rival, con fuerza y ataques frontales que complicaron a la defensa albiceleste. Pero es el mejor seleccionado del mundo también por sus nombres, entre los que figura el arquero de Aston Villa.
El rival de la Scaloneta se definirá este viernes, desde las 22 horas (ARG), cuando Venezuela y Canadá, líder del Grupo B y escolta del Grupo B, respectivamente, choquen en Arlington, Texas. Y la semifinal tendrá lugar el martes 9 de julio en Nueva Jersey (21 horas ARG).
Del otro lado, buscando la semifinal, Colombia-Panamá y Uruguay-Brasil serán los partidos de un sábado cargado de fútbol.
